Cranberry Township, PA, History and Location
Cranberry Township is located in Butler PA, and as of 2000 the population was 23,625. Founded in 1804, it was named for an abundance of native wild cranberries growing along Bush Creek. Native Americans first inhabited Cranberry as they came yearly to hunt and fish along Bush Creek to gather food to take back to their villages. Cranberry Township grew from Indian camps, to rural farmlands, to a fast growing community due to its location with excellent highway connections. It serves as the intersection of Interstate 76 (the PA Turnpike) and 79 and Routes 19 and 228. Upon completion of Interstate 279 in 1989 travel to Pittsburgh from Cranberry was reduced to under half an hour.
